Jamie Triantis shares why she stored her baby’s cord blood with Cell Care
I wasn’t aware before my first pregnancy that umbilical cord blood and tissue is a rich source of stem cells that may be used for medical treatments. I learnt from reading and discussions with my doctor that stem cells from cord blood can be used now for treatment of leukaemia, and there are many clinical trials exploring how cord blood may be used in the future for other conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism and type 1 diabetes.
When I made the decision to store my daughter Layla’s cord blood, it was really important for me to know that the cord blood is a perfect match for her. Importantly, compared to an unknown donor, there is also a much higher possibility that the cord blood stem cells will also be a match for her brother Perry.
I do believe that with all the research that is going on, stem cells will be important in medical treatments in the future and it will be beneficial for my children that I have stored their cord blood and tissue. If my children were to ever get sick with something that could perhaps have been treated using their cord blood or tissue cells, I’d be beside myself to think I considered storing but didn’t take up the option.
I’ve often been asked why I chose to store my daughter’s umbilical cord blood, and I certainly hope my children will never have to use it. I see my decision as an insurance policy for at least the next 30 years for Layla and Perry.
